Farmers on Salisbury Plain dug a circular ditch around 3000 BC, then raised giant sarsens and bluestones brought from the Preseli Hills in Wales, aligning the monument on the midsummer sunrise and midwinter sunset. Surrounded by burial mounds, avenues and the larger stone circle at Avebury, it sits at the centre of a ritual landscape archaeologists are still mapping.
