Java Man and the early humans of Sangiran

In 1891 the Dutch anatomist Eugène Dubois found a skullcap on Java that he believed linked apes and humans. It became the type fossil of Homo erectus, the first human species known to have spread beyond Africa. From the 1930s the eroded hills of Sangiran, north of Solo, produced dozens more fossils, making it one of the richest early-human sites in the world.
