Under a ruined medieval town in southern Georgia, excavations since 1991 have found skulls and bones of early humans dated to about 1.8 million years ago, with their stone tools and the animals they lived among. The five Dmanisi skulls are among the oldest securely dated human fossils outside Africa, and they reopened debate on when and how our ancestors first left it.
