Back from holiday in his laboratory at St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, Alexander Fleming noticed that a mould contaminating a culture plate had killed the bacteria around it. He named the active substance penicillin. Howard Florey and Ernst Chain's team in Oxford made it into a usable drug during the Second World War, and antibiotics have since saved millions of lives.
