Inclusion policy
We list a guide or operator only when its tours are about interpreting the past, led by someone who knows the history.
Who we list
- Providers whose tours are all history-led: battlefields, archaeology, architecture, political, military, social, religious and cultural history.
- Providers that also run a small number of other tours, but only after an editor has reviewed them. We then list only their history tours.
- Independent guides, tour companies and non-profits whose main activity is guiding.
- Day trips from a city to historic sites nearby, such as Terezín from Prague or Arnhem from Amsterdam.
- Tours about real historical crimes and assassinations, such as Jack the Ripper walks.
Who we don't list
- Food, wine, beer and pub tours, including ones with some history in them.
- Ghost, haunted, “dark legends” and paranormal tours.
- Street art and graffiti tours.
- Museums, memorials and heritage sites offering tours of their own premises. We list the guides who take you there instead.
- Adventure, sport, general sightseeing, hop-on hop-off and photography tours.
- Booking platforms and resellers that don't run their own tours.
How listings are researched
We use only information providers publish about their own business. Every fact is linked to its source and dated. We don't copy text or photos: summaries are our own writing, and photos appear only once a provider claims its listing.
Unclaimed listings
If a provider hasn't claimed its listing within six months of our invitation, the listing stays online but we remove its website link and contact details. Claiming the listing restores them.
Credentials
Where a guide belongs to a recognised body, such as the Institute of Tourist Guiding (Blue Badge), the Guild of Battlefield Guides or a national licensing scheme, we show it on their profile with a link to the evidence.
