Samuel de Champlain built a fortified trading post, the Habitation, at the narrows of the St. Lawrence in July 1608; most of his men died of scurvy and dysentery that first winter. Allied with the Wendat, Innu and Algonquin through the fur trade, the post became the capital of New France. Old Quebec, which still keeps its ramparts, grew up around the site.
