Chinese states built walls against the peoples of the northern steppe from the 7th century BC, but the brick and stone sections near Beijing date mainly from the Ming dynasty, which strengthened them after Mongol raids in the 16th century. Watchtowers, garrisons and signal beacons followed the mountain ridges. The wall became a world symbol of China.
