The transatlantic slave trade on the Gold Coast

The Portuguese built São Jorge da Mina at Elmina in 1482, and over three centuries European companies added dozens of forts along the Gold Coast. Captives were held in their dungeons before being shipped across the Atlantic, part of a trade that carried about 12.5 million Africans to the Americas. Cape Coast and Elmina castles are now memorials visited by descendants from around the world.
