After a three-month siege of Quebec, British troops under James Wolfe climbed the cliffs at the Anse au Foulon by night and formed up on the plateau west of the walls. The battle lasted about an hour; Wolfe and the French commander Montcalm were both mortally wounded. Quebec surrendered days later, Montreal fell in 1760 and France ceded Canada to Britain in 1763.
