Over two days British and American bombers dropped about 3,900 tonnes of bombs on Dresden, and the firestorm destroyed the baroque city centre. Up to 25,000 people were killed. The raid's purpose and toll have been argued over ever since, and inflated figures served Nazi and later far-right propaganda. The Frauenkirche, left as a ruin for decades, was rebuilt by 2005.
