Japanese carrier aircraft attacked the US Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor on a Sunday morning, sinking or damaging 19 ships and killing more than 2,400 Americans, 1,177 of them on the battleship Arizona. The United States declared war on Japan the next day, and Germany declared war on the United States days later, turning separate wars into a global one.
