East Germany's Ministry for State Security watched its own people through some 91,000 staff and over 170,000 informers by 1989, and held political prisoners at its Hohenschönhausen remand prison. On 15 January 1990 citizens stormed its Normannenstraße headquarters to stop files being destroyed. The files were later opened to the public, and millions have asked to read what the Stasi held on them.
