Five months after independence, as Gandhi walked to his evening prayer meeting in the garden of Birla House in New Delhi, the Hindu nationalist Nathuram Godse shot him three times. Gandhi had been fasting against the violence between Hindus and Muslims that followed partition. He was cremated the next day at Raj Ghat on the Yamuna, where his memorial now stands.
