After the military coup of July 1936 split Spain, Franco's forces reached the edge of Madrid in November and attacked through the University City and the Casa de Campo. Militias and the International Brigades helped hold the Republican capital, which endured bombing and shelling for more than two years until it surrendered in March 1939, days before the war ended.
