Al-Qaeda hijackers flew two airliners into the World Trade Center towers in New York and a third into the Pentagon; a fourth crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers fought back. Nearly 3,000 people were killed. The attacks led to US-led wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and to a new era of security measures. Two memorial pools now fill the towers' footprints.
