Led by Popé of Ohkay Owingeh, Pueblo peoples across New Mexico rose together against Spanish rule and the suppression of their religion, killing over 400 colonists and Franciscan friars. They besieged Santa Fe and drove the Spanish south to El Paso. Spain did not return until 1692, and the revolt helped preserve Pueblo languages and ceremonies.
