Across Germany and Austria on the night of 9 November 1938, Nazi stormtroopers and their supporters burned synagogues, wrecked Jewish shops and homes and attacked Jews. Some 30,000 Jewish men were sent to concentration camps, including Sachsenhausen, and the community was made to pay a collective fine. In Berlin, local police saved the New Synagogue from the flames.
