Two Nationalist generals, Zhang Xueliang and Yang Hucheng, detained their leader Chiang Kai-shek at the Huaqing hot springs outside Xi'an to force him to stop fighting the Communists and resist Japan. Chiang was released after two weeks, and a second Nationalist–Communist united front followed in 1937. The truce helped the Communist Party survive and grow.
