The Germans sealed some 400,000 Jews into the Warsaw Ghetto in 1940 and in summer 1942 deported about 265,000 from the Umschlagplatz to be gassed at Treblinka. When they came to deport the rest, Jewish fighters resisted for almost a month with pistols and petrol bombs. The SS burned the ghetto block by block and blew up the Great Synagogue.
