Herod the Great built palaces on this desert mesa above the Dead Sea. After Rome crushed the Jewish revolt and destroyed Jerusalem, rebels led by Eleazar ben Ya'ir held out here until the Tenth Legion built a huge ramp to the summit. The historian Josephus wrote that the 960 defenders chose death over capture. Roman camps and the ramp survive.
