The Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik built the Dome of the Rock over the rock at the centre of the Temple Mount, known to Muslims as the Haram al-Sharif and linked with Muhammad's Night Journey. It is the oldest surviving major Islamic monument, and with the nearby al-Aqsa Mosque it makes Jerusalem Islam's third holiest city. Its gilded dome dominates the Old City.
