Montgomery's Eighth Army broke through Rommel's German and Italian forces at El Alamein, on the coast west of Alexandria, after nearly two weeks of fighting through minefields. The defeat ended the Axis threat to Egypt and the Suez Canal and began the Axis retreat from North Africa. Commonwealth, German and Italian cemeteries and memorials now line the coast road.
