Protests in Timișoara to protect the pastor László Tőkés grew into a revolt against Nicolae Ceaușescu. On 21 December his staged rally in Bucharest dissolved into jeers, and next day he fled the Central Committee roof by helicopter as the army changed sides. He and his wife were captured, tried and shot on 25 December. About 1,100 people died.
