A committee of mostly American businessmen, backed by US Marines landed from the USS Boston, deposed Queen Liliʻuokalani after she sought a new constitution restoring royal power. She yielded under protest to avoid bloodshed. The United States annexed Hawaii in 1898, and in 1993 Congress formally apologised. ʻIolani Palace, where the queen was later confined, is the only royal palace on US soil.
