After capturing China's Nationalist capital in December 1937, Japanese troops killed large numbers of disarmed soldiers and civilians over about six weeks, with Chinese estimates of 300,000 dead, and raped tens of thousands of women. A Safety Zone run by foreign residents, including the German businessman John Rabe, sheltered many. The killings remain a source of tension between China and Japan.
