On 1 March 1919, nine years into Japanese colonial rule, 33 religious leaders signed a Korean declaration of independence in Seoul while students read it aloud to crowds in Pagoda Park. Peaceful demonstrations spread across the country for months. Japanese police and troops crushed them, killing hundreds and by some counts thousands, and filled prisons such as Seodaemun with protesters.
