The United States bought France's claim to Louisiana, about 2.1 million square kilometres west of the Mississippi, for $15 million. The formal transfer was signed in the Cabildo in New Orleans, and the US flag was raised over the Place d'Armes. The deal doubled the country's size and opened the way to westward expansion and the dispossession of Native nations.
