After a naval attack on the Dardanelles failed in March, Allied troops landed on the Gallipoli peninsula to knock the Ottoman Empire out of the war. Eight months of trench fighting killed more than 100,000 men on both sides before the Allies withdrew. The campaign became a founding story for Australia, New Zealand and modern Turkey, whose future leader Mustafa Kemal commanded there.
