Gavrilo Princip, a young Bosnian Serb nationalist, shot the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne and his wife Sophie on a street corner beside the Latin Bridge in Sarajevo, after their driver took a wrong turn. Austria-Hungary's ultimatum to Serbia and the alliances behind it turned the killing into the First World War within six weeks.
