After driving British forces down the Malay Peninsula, Japanese troops crossed the Johor Strait on 8 February 1942. A week later General Arthur Percival surrendered the island at the Ford factory in Bukit Timah, and some 80,000 British, Indian and Australian soldiers became prisoners. Japanese forces then massacred thousands of Chinese civilians in the Sook Ching purge.
