Irish republicans seized the General Post Office and other buildings in Dublin and proclaimed an Irish Republic while Britain was at war. The British army crushed the rising in six days, shelling the city centre. The execution of its leaders, fourteen of them in Kilmainham Gaol, turned public opinion and led to the War of Independence and an Irish state in 1922.
