In February 1966 the apartheid government declared District Six, a mixed inner-city neighbourhood below Table Mountain, a whites-only area under the Group Areas Act. Over the following years more than 60,000 residents were moved to townships on the Cape Flats and their homes bulldozed, leaving only churches and mosques. Much of the land still lies empty while former residents press their claims.
