Thessaloniki had been a mainly Sephardic Jewish city since exiles from Spain arrived after 1492, and Jews long formed its largest community. Under German occupation, about 45,000 were deported by train from the Baron Hirsch quarter to Auschwitz in 1943, and almost all were killed. The old Jewish cemetery had already been destroyed and its gravestones used for building.
