Junior army officers, worn down by colonial wars in Angola, Mozambique and Guinea-Bissau, overthrew Portugal's Estado Novo dictatorship in an almost bloodless coup signalled by songs on the radio. Crowds put carnations in the soldiers' rifles. Portugal held free elections within a year, and its African colonies became independent in 1974 and 1975.
