Hitler's last major offensive in the west struck thinly held American lines in the snowbound Ardennes, aiming for the port of Antwerp. The surrounded US 101st Airborne and other units held the road junction of Bastogne until Patton's Third Army broke through. It was the costliest battle of the war for the US Army, and Germany's reserves never recovered.
