When army officers rose against the Republic in July 1936, workers' militias and loyal police defeated them in Barcelona's streets, and anarchist unions took over factories and transport. George Orwell fought for the revolution and described its infighting in May 1937. Italian bombers raided the city again and again, residents dug more than a thousand shelters, and Franco's troops entered in January 1939.
