Three days after Hiroshima, a US bomber dropped a plutonium bomb over Nagasaki's Urakami valley, killing about 70,000 people by the end of 1945. The blast destroyed Urakami Cathedral, the heart of Japan's oldest Catholic community. Japan announced its surrender six days later. Nagasaki remains the last city attacked with a nuclear weapon.
