Teotihuacan grew into one of the largest cities in the world by about AD 400, with perhaps 100,000 people living on a planned grid around the Avenue of the Dead. Its influence reached as far as the Maya region. After its centre burned in the 6th century it was abandoned, and the Aztecs later named it the place where the gods were born.
