In the parlour of her Manchester home, Emmeline Pankhurst and a group of women founded the Women's Social and Political Union under the motto 'Deeds, not words'. Its members, nicknamed suffragettes, used marches, window-smashing, arson and hunger strikes to demand the vote. Women over 30 won the vote in 1918, and women gained it on equal terms with men in 1928.
