Knossos was the largest centre of the Minoan civilisation, one of Europe's earliest urban and literate societies, with a multi-storey palace of courtyards, storerooms, light wells and painted walls. Its maze of rooms fed the Greek myth of the Minotaur. Arthur Evans excavated it from 1900 and partly rebuilt it in concrete, a restoration still argued over.
