With Spain's king held captive by Napoleon, the leading residents of Buenos Aires removed the Spanish viceroy and set up a local government, the Primera Junta, on 25 May 1810, while a crowd gathered outside the Cabildo. The week began the Argentine War of Independence, formally declared at Tucumán in 1816. Plaza de Mayo takes its name from it.
