After Napoleon's defeat, monarchs and diplomats gathered at the Habsburg court to redraw the map of Europe. Steered by Austria's Metternich, the talks restored many dynasties, created a German Confederation and set a balance of power among the great states, while balls filled the Hofburg. The settlement kept Europe free of a continent-wide war for a century.
