In the Harland & Wolff shipyard on Belfast's Queen's Island, thousands of workers built the liners Olympic and Titanic side by side, then the largest ships afloat. Titanic was launched in May 1911 and left Belfast in April 1912; days later she struck an iceberg and sank with the loss of about 1,500 lives. The disaster led to the first international rules on safety at sea.
