As settlers spread over Tasmania's grasslands, conflict with Aboriginal Tasmanians grew into a war of raids and killings. Martial law was declared in 1828, and in 1830 the government's 'Black Line' tried to drive the remaining clans out of the settled districts. Most survivors were moved to Wybalenna on Flinders Island, where many died. Their descendants still campaign for land and recognition.
