British regulars marched from Boston to seize militia weapons stored at Concord. Shots were exchanged with militia on Lexington Green at dawn, and at Concord's North Bridge the colonists fired back in force. Harried by militia along the road back to Boston, the British lost about 270 men killed, wounded or missing. The day began the American War of Independence.
