In the bay of Pylos, a combined British, French and Russian fleet destroyed the Ottoman-Egyptian fleet that was crushing the Greek revolt begun in 1821. It was the last major battle fought entirely by sailing ships. The defeat forced the Ottomans to accept Greek self-rule, and an independent Greek kingdom was recognised in 1830.
