Early in Britain's invasion of the Zulu kingdom, a Zulu army of about 20,000 overran a British camp at Isandlwana, killing more than 1,300 soldiers and African auxiliaries. Hours later about 150 men held the mission station at Rorke's Drift against repeated attacks. Britain went on to end Zulu independence within months, but Isandlwana remains one of the heaviest defeats of a colonial army.
